KaiZenRD EMR

Abstract

KaiZen®RD EMR is a customizable Electronic Medical Record (EMR) developed expressly for Registered Dietitians In Private Practice, by a dietitian in private practice! KaiZenRD eliminates the need for paper charts while producing professional client and physician notes as it electronically bills for FREE...all during the patient visit. KaiZen®RD EMR reduces labor and errors in producing the clinical and financial reports, with significant time and money savings in billing insurance companies. It also provides a more consistent method of patient interviewing, counseling and data reporting. The outcomes reports document the effectiveness of dietitians in private practice, which should increase insurance coverage for dietitian services, hence increasing the numbers of dietitians going into private practice.

Additional Questions

Who is your customer?

The target market is Registered Dietitians world wide of which there are 64,000 in the US of which approximately 10,000 Registered Dietitians are currently in private practice. In view of the current rate of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer there will be an increase in the number of dietitians entering private practice to address these challenges.

What problem does this idea/product solve or what market need does it serve?

Most dietitian practitioners are using paper medical records which are illegible and inefficient and are often stored in non-HIPAA compliant plastic bins in homes and offices. Patients and physicians often receive hand written, illegible notes or the practitioner spends a great deal of time typing up documents after the visit. Billing is often done by paper and mailed or documents are pre parted after the visit and sent to an expensive billing service.

Explain how you (your team) will execute to make this idea/product successful? What gives you (your team) an advantage over others already in the market or new to this market?

Since its release on March 1, 2012, one hundred and thirty seven dietitians have signed onto KaiZenRD EMR. We are currently in the process of converting the current program, which was written in Microsoft Access, to an open source web based platform using Python programming language. The new open source platform will allow for an unlimited number of users with significantly decreased hosting costs. Two Australian based companies recently released competing software programs. Once the conversion of KaiZenRD is complete and hosting costs are reduced, the US based 'home-grown' product will be more advantageous to house protected patient data than an International product.
